About

BEGINNINGS

My professional editing career started in a corporate capacity, editing HR and Training documentation and handbooks. As a hobby, I edited fiction for friends and classmates.

Insomniac Editing grew from a fortuitous meeting with another writer. We were both searching for beta readers. I needed guidance on the first chapter of a rough draft, and, unknown to me at the time, they were a published author, considering a new pen name and genre. I went beyond beta reading and edited their manuscript. After reviewing it, they asked me to edit their next book—and the next. The rest is history! (❁´◡`❁)

*Fun fact – My spouse named my freelance venture Insomniac Editing because I started out editing at night while everyone else was asleep.

FOUNDATIONS

As an early storyteller, I talked about my invisible friends constantly. I won an award for reading the most books in my kindergarten class and started writing down stories as soon as I could. Later, I edited papers in school for fellow students, and I wrote for the school newspaper in college. Lit and writing classes dominated my class schedule, despite earning my first degree in psychology.
Reading and writing are essential building blocks of editing. The knowledge I’ve gained studying both subjects has allowed me to connect with writing on a deeper level. By making these connections, I feel I can better serve my clients.

*Fun fact – When asked, “What kind of writer are you? Scheduled or find little chunks in the day.” My answer was “It’s more like a drive-by because it’s random and totally inconsistent.” I’m the type of writer who has notebooks, paper towels, and scrap paper scribbled on all over the house!

CREATIVE

Like many editors I’ve connected with, I am a creator. I write. I draw. I paint. I sculpt. I sew. I play instruments. I am a dabbler by nature. What does this mean for you?
As your editor, I bring a lot of creativity and life experience to my editing. I’ve lived at least six lives and have been fortunate to meet people from all over the world who have shared their experiences with me.
I am the parent of a neurodiverse child, which has led me to work with neurodiverse clients (ASD, ADHD, Dysgraphia, Dyslexia, OCD), so I am used to finding creative solutions to challenges which is a transferable skill for all my clients.

LIFELONG LEARNING

In addition to editing classes with ACES, EFA, and others, I regularly take writing and literature classes. These courses and lectures improve my writing and increase what I offer clients: up-to-date skills and sharing the information I gather.
I’ve also found authors’ virtual readings to be excellent sources of learning. And, of course, virtual and in-person conferences are also ways I keep up with new ideas and information in the writing and editing community.
